"Generation's Shore " 10 x 20
oil on linen   (SOLD )

Did a plein air study of this privately owned lovely location on one of Wisconsin's clearest lakes in northern Wisconsin, Birch Lake...then, opted to do a panoramic studio work.

Henri Matisse once said, "a thimblefull of red appears redder than a bucketful"

Meaning...the painter has to be cautious even with the glorious presence of so much explosive color of the fall not to over play his hand painting it. Too much, and you lose the power of its presence. Contrast is needed from the painting of opposites- (neutrals...complements etc) to help the feeling transfer and be felt by the viewer.

I believe while the painting "feels" I have a good deal of explosive color, I have isolated its chroma purity to a focal area of my intent, and have managed it successfully. The secret is to paint enough to make it "feel" without having to literally paint more than what is needed, or the feeling is compromised/lost.

A fun piece to paint!
